Drowning in Credit Card Debt? Here's the Order of Operations

The short answer
Stabilise first: make every minimum payment on time to protect your credit. Then map every balance, rate and payment. Then compare your options — a balance transfer, a consolidation loan, a mortgage refinance, or credit counselling — based on what your equity and income actually support.
Step one: stop the damage
Missed payments do more lasting harm than high balances. If something has to give this month, protect the payment history first — it's the largest single factor in your credit score and it's the hardest thing to repair.
Step two: put it all on one page
Every balance, every rate, every minimum payment, every due date. Most people are surprised by the total, and almost everyone is surprised by how much of the monthly payment is pure interest. This page is also exactly what I need to help you.
Step three: match the tool to the situation
| Situation | Likely tool |
|---|---|
| Small balance, good credit | Balance transfer promo or focused repayment |
| Moderate balances, strong income, no home equity | Consolidation loan or line of credit |
| Meaningful home equity, tight cash flow | Mortgage refinance / debt consolidation |
| No equity, unmanageable total | Non-profit credit counselling or licensed insolvency advice |
I'll tell you honestly if your situation belongs in the last row. That's not a file I can help with, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.
Questions people ask
Should I stop using my credit cards entirely?
Closing every account can hurt your score by reducing available credit and account age. Reducing limits and pausing use is usually a better approach than closing everything.
How long does it take to recover my credit after consolidating?
Utilisation improvements can show within a couple of billing cycles. A pattern of on-time payments builds over six to twelve months.
Want this applied to your actual numbers?
Articles are general. Your file isn't. Bring your balances and your renewal date and I'll tell you what I'd do in your position.
